Back Up Cameras
I remember the way my grandparents generation was with new technologies. They basically wanted nothing to do with them. They were just too unlike everything they had known for their entire lives and they just found them to be too confusing and strange. Just setting up and using devices like a telephone answering machine or a VCR seemed too unfamiliar and complicated to them. They were in fact, still living when personal computers and the World Wide Web came into being but they didn’t have any desire or attempt to make use of these technologies. I guess it was all just too much for their generation. I find myself now in their position and I am having a problem with making use of my new car’s back up camera. I have never driven a car before with a back up camera (I guess I’m behind with this technology) except for a rental car and I did not actually use the backup camera. I think my own parents or at least my father has me beat and already does use a back up camera. 😮 My experience thus far is that I am afraid to use it. At age 58 it just seems so unnatural and wrong to me to back up while looking forward and not even turn around to look behind me. 😱 It just goes against everything that makes sense to me and what I have always done for my entire life. Wow, that sounds familiar. When I do look at the back up camera, I can see that it gives me a much clearer view of what is behind me and the space that I actually have. I’m still afraid to trust it though. My brain still tells me that it cannot be right to back up while looking forward. I guess I need to practice and keep trying to teach my old brain new tricks. I don’t want to shun new technologies when they are actually improvements and better ways of doing things. It’s just difficult to go against my decades long brain wiring! I still also haven’t learned about all the 500 million features that my new car has. I just drive it in my old-fashioned way.
One more thought about backup cameras. Back up cameras show us what is behind us but we still need to remember to look side to side to see what is going on there before using the backup camera to back up. I will get used to using back up cameras!
Update: 😄 After making it a point to actually start using my back up camera, I am getting used to it and realize that it is OK to back up while looking forward when I have a camera that gives me a better view of what is behind me, than my own eyes while looking backwards. 👍 My old brain isn’t so hopeless after all. 😂
