Apology To Native Americans
President Biden made an apology to Native Americans for the more than century long practice of forcibly separating their children from their families and people to send them to assimilation boarding schools where they were subject to terrible abuses in order to rob them of their identities and force them to become a part of the white man’s culture. This apology is more than deserved and overdue. Native Americans absolutely deserve to have the wrong that was done to them by the US government validated and apologized for. This should not be a hidden and unacknowledged part of our country’s history.
It came to my attention tonight that I have been guilty of not reading about President Biden‘s apology because I was more focused on what has been taking place in regard to the upcoming presidential election which is now taking place today and tonight.
I would never want to minimize the importance and reality of this unfortunate chapter of our American history or dishonor the importance of the validation and apology that is necessary and long overdue. I appreciate the true significance of this.
The crazy me brought it to my attention that I should remember and reflect on this tonight. I even agreed that I should stop and make this my priority before tuning in to tonight’s news coverage about the election. This is the same crazy me that believes that our 47th president will be Kamala Harris.
Tonight is quite a night.
I very recently watched “one flew over the cuckoo’s nest” for the first time. You have to wonder how and why and what the story might have been that led to the chief being hospitalized in the psychiatric hospital. I couldn’t hear the audio in the movie in the part where the chief talked about his father. I liked that the chief was a character whose personal strength, stability and soundness of mind was felt by the viewer. This was my take anyway. It granted him the respect, from the viewer, that was never granted to the real Native American people whose own humanity and identity was treated with such terrible invalidation and disrespect. The movie was based on a book if I am remembering correctly. I don’t know why I recently thought of watching this movie. I guess it was just a suggestion that I gave to myself from myself.
Damn this election sucks. Looks like trump is winning. This is incredibly sad.
