Saturday Morning Cartoons

Saturday morning cartoons are something that I’m pretty sure children haven’t understood for a very long time now.  Those were the days, before cable television even existed and television viewing was free of charge.  We had to have rabbit ears antennas on top of our televisions or preferably on our roofs.  We were limited to viewing whatever was being aired on the network stations at any time.  We also had to get up and walk to the television to change the channel.  If you happened to be home sick from school, the choices were sorry indeed.  Daytime week day viewing left much to be desired.  There were preschool programs in the morning.  After that you might be able to catch a game show that you didn’t mind watching like “The Price Is Right”.  But the early afternoons were a sorry mix of soap operas and maybe some very unappealing series.  I never did care for the Beverly Hillbillies or Green Acres.  Frank always liked those types of shows, so maybe one needed to at least be a late born boomer to appreciate them. 😂 Saturday mornings, though, were television gold for children.  They were all about cartoons (the better ones) and other children’s programs like the “The Land Of The Lost”!  In between there was “School House Rock” which was at least catchy and not painful to watch.  Sundays unfortunately weren’t the same.  Arriving home from Sunday school, there was really nothing but Gumby and Pokey and maybe some other clay animation program. 😛 Children later on did not stop appreciating and wanting to watch children’s programs once cable television and channels like Nickelodeon came along.  The glory of Saturday morning cartoons, though, was on its’ journey to becoming obsolete.
